“We know how they play. The ball is in the air most of the time and you have to defend those things. They were very aggressive as you’ve seen tonight. There’s no doubt it’s a red card (for the challenge on David de Gea). It’s obvious. The referee saw it differently. We’re looking for players to be protected and didn’t get that.”

Sir Alex Ferguson: “It was a terrific save at an important time because if they’d scored it we would have been out, no doubt about that.”
Rio Ferdinand: “David made a great save at the end to keep us in the game and the tie. We should have finished the game off in the first half, though. Had we done that we wouldn’t be talking about any saves at the end of the game.”
Michael Carrick: “We’ve mixed emotions in some respects. We’re completely disappointed, from the position we were in, not to finish it off - there are no excuses for that - but at the end we could be out of the competition with the opportunities they had, especially the save David made from Mata.
